Event: Veteran’s Seminar
May 10, 2019
Alexandria Lewis, a Veteran of the U.S. Army, is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri School of Social Work. The courses she teaches includes Death, Grief, Loss, and Military Social Work. Her goal is to provide broad concepts about military culture that can impact grief and loss, death and non-death related losses that may be experienced by service members, Veterans, and their family members. Also, she teaches ways to support this population, with the understanding that each service member, Veteran, and family member is unique with different life experiences. Her teaching philosophy is active learning, and her goal is not to “lecture” with 500 PowerPoint slides but to create meaningful opportunities for everyone to walk away with information they can apply in their professional and/or personal lives.
Representatives from the Missouri Veterans Commission State Agency will provide information on accessing earned VA benefits for Veterans and their Family Members through connecting those Veterans and their family members to their nearest Veteran Service Officer; information about the Missouri Veterans Commission’s seven beautifully appointed Veterans Homes located across the state, as well as VA’s aid & attendance benefit which helps offset the cost of in-home care or needed skilled nursing care; and information about the Missouri Veterans Commission’s five meticulously maintained Veterans Cemeteries, which includes information about burial and military honor benefits available to Veterans. The goal of providing this information to the team members is to inform those working with individuals who are utilizing hospice and palliative care services to assist them in linking those Veterans and their families to helpful and supportive resources as they go through this challenging time in their loved ones life.
