Overview:

This End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) activity will educate nurses and health professionals on end-of-life conversations and palliative care. ELNEC is an initiative to improve both end-of-life and palliative care.

Objectives

At the end of this educational initiative, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the philosophy and principles of palliative care
  • Describe interventions that can prevent or diminish symptoms at the end of life
  • Identify factors that influence communication in the palliative care setting
  • Outline pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies to relieve pain.
  • Discuss the ethical principles utilized in addressing end of life/palliative issues

Speaker

Kassie Hodge, MSN, RN, CHPN is the Director of Hospice and Palliative Care at Mosaic Life Care Hospice. She is starting her 5th year as director where she was previously a hospice nurse in the field.

9:00 – 10:00: Overview of ELNEC and Hospice/Palliative Care nursing

10:00 – 11:00: Pain Management in Palliative Care: reviews the basic principles of pain assessment and management with a focus on pain at the end of life. Comprehensive pain assessment is essential to adequate pain relief, yet there are many barriers that imped the assessment and treatment.

11:00 – 11:15: Break

11:15 – 12:45: Symptom Management in palliative care: addresses common symptoms in advanced disease and the role of the nurse in managing these symptoms

12:45 – 1:15 Lunch

1:15 – 2:45: Ethical issues in palliative care; will address some key ethical issues and legal concerns in the end-of-life/palliative care and resources to address these in practice

2:45 – 3:15: Questions

9:00 – 10:00: 1hr: Overview of Cultural and Ethical considerations: reviews dimensions of culture including overview of cultural and spiritual considerations in palliative care.

10:00 – 11:00: communication in Palliative care: this section will address techniques you can use in palliative care to improve communication between interdisciplinary team members, as well as with the patient and his/her family.

11:00 – 11:15: Break

11:15 – 12:15: Loss, Grief and Bereavement: this section addresses the challenging aspects of grief, loss and bereavement of patient and their families as well as the loss that health care professionals experience.

12:15 – 12:45: Lunch

12:45 – 1:45 Final hours of life; describes how to provide care in the final moments of life.

1:45 – 2:15: Questions

Webinar Information:
The cost for this  2 part ELNEC training is $300 for members & $400 for non-members.
Attendee must register for both parts on first registration.
Same attendee must complete both parts to receive your certificate for completing the leadership trainings.
There are no refunds, however substitutions are welcome.
Please use your Medicare ID number for your membership number.
Registrants will receive the Zoom link and call in information the week of the training.
This is an intermediate level course.
Nurses and Social Worker CE’s $30.00 each participant.

Upon completion of this course each attendee will be required to complete an evaluation. Each participant will then receive a general certificate. Each attendee must complete the entire course to receive the certificate. Certificates will be distributed to attendees after returning the sign in sheet and evaluation to MHPCA. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. AXIS Medical Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive a maximum of 9.0 continuing education credits.
